You can absolutely get better, yes. In some cases, it’s more a case of managing the problem. OCD – obsessive-compulsive disorder – is not necessarily something you get rid of. Those unfortunate people suffer from unwanted thoughts and images that they find hard to ignore. They can reduce the anxiety and learn to live with it, recognising what is a symptom of the illness and calling it out for what it is.

Different people react in different ways. Some people will develop a mental illness early in their lives and it stays with the forever – but they manage it and live perfectly normal lives. For the vast majority of people, having a mental illness shouldn’t be something which stops anyone from doing anything in life.

There are, however, times where people can be cured of mental illness too.

It depends, everyone has a different outlook. You can absolutely get better from a condition, yes. In reality, you will probably be dealing with some aspect of it for the rest of your life, although these are usually very manageable.

I agree with Steven. Mental disorders are often chronic and can be managed, so people aren’t often cured but they recover, and learn to manage stress to avoid relapse or manage their symptoms. Sometimes people do get better permanently.

I agree with Steve, you can get better but this may involve becoming better at recognising the signs and symptoms of the illness. Therapies targeted at understanding the symptoms help you better understand how to deal with them early on before they become overwhelming.
