• Question: Cancer is a traumatic experience that no one should have to encounter, and the road to recovery can be draining and feel like a lifetime. If you had the chance to change any aspect of cancer, its treatment, or a means of helping those experiencing the issue, what would you do? And why?

Oh wow – this is a properly deep question. I’ve had a couple of family members either be diagnose or die of cancer, so it really makes me think.

Obviously the no. 1 answer is to have a prevention of all cancers – but I don’t think that’s what you’re looking for. I assume you’re asking about the experience of cancer? I think the worst would be the pain that can be associated with it – that must be the hardest bit to deal with for everyone. However, if all treatments worked 100% then I guess the pain would be ‘worth it’?

Do you know what I’m not an expert in this issue, so I’ll let the others answer this one.

I have lost many family members to cancer – but not my Mum. The experience was awful, and it changed our lives. I quit Uni. I just over-reacted to the max and was voluntary unemployed for 12 months just helping out around the house. The process brought us all closer together and it’s a good example of a positive thing coming out of a negative experience.

My job just know highlights how bad the side-effects of the medicines and treatments can be, to the point where people refuse treatment. Most medicines are tested and tested and tested before they get rolled out but with cancer there’s an urgency to get them out – to save lives. But the side-effects can be awful. If I could, I would minimise the side-effects – it would encourage more uptake of treatments, saving lives, and it would improve people’s quality of life.
