I wish I knew! I don’t think we know much about dreams. I cannot think of anything more difficult to measure. Let’s be positive and say that it is because you are creative! Good ideas can come from dreams. Lots of famous thinkers, musicians, painters etc have spoken about inspiration from their dreams.

It’s not fully known but there are some hints from recent research. At one point it was felt that poor sleep might predict who remembers dreams better than others. For example, we tend to remember quite a few dreams if we dose during the morning as we shift in and out of wakefulness. Surely, those who wake up more often during the night are more likely to remember their dreams in a similar fashion to what many of us experience in the morning? Well when this hypothesis was tested it was found that the opposite was true. Those with better sleep, female, and who were more creative were more likely to recall their dreams. This is seen in both adult and adolescent samples. The association between female gender, creativity and dreams is fairly robust but the link between dream recall and sleep quality is more uncertain.

Of course, this is completely ignoring why some of us might experience nightmares or remember them…
