      You have to find a ‘gap in the literature’ – so we are constantly reading around our subjects until we find something that isn’t widely researched. Also it helps if there is interest in the media – for example my recent research into zero-hours contracts is the first study to look at them, even though they’re a big topic of general conversation.

      Deciding on a topic, and then seeing if there’s a gap in the literature. Hopefully, if there is, you can continue!
